Safety in and out of your home

Safety outside the home

Anti- social behaviour (ASB) is when an individual, or group of people, act in a way that causes harassment, alarm, or distress.

North Tyneside Council works closely with Northumbria Police to effectively tackle ASB and keep neighbourhoods safe.

It is vital that you report ASB so that we are aware of it and can immediately act to support you.

How to report ASB:

Safety inside the home

Your home has been checked before you moved in for your safety.

Gas

As your landlord, North Tyneside Council has a legal requirement to carry out a gas safety test when you start your tenancy, and then yearly after that. You will receive a gas safety certificate, and we will contact you in 10 months’ time to carry out the next one.

If you smell gas (a strong rotten egg- like smell) follow these instructions:

  1. Turn off the gas at the mains, should be located next to your gas meter
  2. Open doors and windows
  3. Don’t light any flames, for example matches or cigarettes
  4. Don’t touch any switches
  5. Get out of your home
  6. Call your provider

Electricity

You need to find out where your fuse box is and how you turn off the electricity using the trip switch- usually a large red switch in the box.

If your electricity goes off, first try resetting the trip switches in your fuse box. This means flipping back any switches that may have tripped into the ‘off’ position.

Water

Ensure you know where your stopcock is and what it looks like.

The stopcock is the tap that will turn off all the water in your property, in an emergency you will need to turn it off to prevent flooding.

Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms

You should check the battery monthly. You can do this by pressing the button in the middle of the alarm.

As a council tenant, it should already be fitted in your home.

Fire safety in flats, accessed by a communal entrance

Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility, and we all need to do our bit to keep each other safe. It is important everyone understands the fire safety procedures, especially in blocks of flats where it is important to always keep corridors and walkways free of obstructions.
