Budgeting and paying your rent
Rent
Your first rent payment is due at the start of your tenancy, and then due every Monday for the weeks ahead.
You will get a payment reference number from your New Homes Officer. Please keep track of it.
If you are in receipt of Universal Credit, you must log in and update your journal with the date your tenancy starts and how much it costs.
How to pay rent:
- Pay by direct debit
- Visit www.northtyneside.gov.uk and pay online
- Pay over the phone via the customer contact centre by calling 0345 200 0102
- Pay at a Post Office or PayPoint outlet.
Council tax
Council Tax is the tax that is paid to the council to cover things like bins being emptied, social care, libraries, pavements and roads. It is very important that you act when you receive a Council Tax bill in the post.
If you live alone, you are eligible for a 25% discount on your Council Tax. Ensure you complete the form correctly with who is living in your home online.
You can pay it on our Council Tax page, or under 'Pay for it'
- By calling 0345 2000 107 and choosing option 2 — have your Council Tax account number to hand
- At a Post Office or PayPoint outlet (please take your bill with the barcode on)
You may be eligible for Council Tax support, to find out more, go to ‘Council Tax Support’, or pop into a community hub to speak to someone.
Moving into your first home can be an expensive time and it is important that you manage your money properly. It could be useful to write down how much you need to allocate for each thing.
The Tenancy and Financial Support Team are always there if you need extra support to sustain your tenancy independently. They can help with income maximisation and reducing outgoings, as well as help with energy costs, paying priority bills, and debts. You can self-refer into the team by completing the form on the Tenancy and Financial Support page.
