Foreward
Councillor Sandra Graham Cabinet Member responsible for Community Safety and the Climate Emergency.
Our Council remains committed and focussed on our Net Zero Action Plan. We are delivering our highly challenging carbon reduction target whilst costs increase and our resources are limited, making the most of external funding to do so.
Our work continues to evolve in the reduction of our own emissions and supporting others in the Borough reduce theirs. We are also developing our specific plans to support communities across the Borough to adapt to our changing climate and extreme weather events caused by a warming and wetter climate. We will be undertaking further work on this in the autumn.
Our broad scope of work on climate change and reducing emissions have a much wider range of beneficial impacts across the Borough. There are range of direct and indirect co-benefits such as improving the health of residents, the economic aspects of transitioning to a low carbon economy, the creation of new jobs, the growth in green industries, together with increased energy security.
Our work cannot be done in isolation, and we place a great deal of importance in the activities we undertake around collaboration and working with our partners within different sectors in the Borough, including businesses, community groups and other public service organisations.
Engaging the public in the transition to net zero and ensuring that people understand the changes required and the benefits they can bring is vital to success. By working in this way, we can make a significant contribution to the overall national 2050 target and support the emerging transitional national policies.
We will continue to work with Government through various channels to unlock and access the relevant funding which will ensure we can fully meet our objectives borough wide.
