Industrial accidents and environmental pollution
Industrial accidents and environmental pollution is a real risk facing North Tyneside. There are several industrial sites across Northumbria which process and store dangerous substances. An incident at one of these sites could have offsite implications.
Sites with larger quantities of dangerous substances fall under the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations 2015. These regulations aim to prevent major accidents at these sites and to limit the consequences of any incidents. COMAH sites are tightly controlled and monitored.
Sites must provide those who live around the site with extra information. This should describe the hazards, safety measures in place, and what the public should do in an incident.
An awareness of the sites in your community, and knowledge of how to react to an incident, can minimise the risk you face.
