Frequently Asked Questions

We know that applying for a new job and interviewing can be quite an anxious time, so we have put together a FAQ below that should hopefully answer any questions that might be playing on your mind.

If there is anything else you’re wondering, feel free to ask us.

How much do I need to know about North Tyneside Council before my interview?

That really depends on the role you’re applying for and if knowledge of local authority was stated in the criteria in the job description, person specification and advert.

But don’t worry, we won’t expect you to know everything about us at interview, but we think it would be useful to have a look at our NTC plan, our values and what we stand for.

You can find this information in our Colleague Experience section.

What are the Council’s values?

We have four key values that are the cornerstones of the service we provide for those who both live and work within our borough:

  • We Listen
  • We Care
  • We are Ambitious
  • We are Good Value for Money

Our ambitious North Tyneside Plan is the driving force for the work we do day-to-day. We aim to create a borough that is thriving, family-friendly, caring, secure, and green. This is demonstrated through every service we provide, but also through our partnerships with our residents, our businesses, our volunteer sector, and all other key organisations. Our commitment to the community is the most important part of our work.

How is North Tyneside Council structured?

Although you may not have any direct contact with the Elected Mayor, Cabinet, and Councillors in your role, it is important that you are aware that North Tyneside Council is a democratic-led organisation with an Elected Mayor and 60 elected Members.

Did you know? North Tyneside Council is the only council within the Tyne and Wear area to have a Mayor that has been elected by the residents of North Tyneside and not by a political party. We are accountable to our residents, through our Elected Members. The Elected Mayor and Cabinet set the policy direction of the organisation and the senior leadership team (SLT) are responsible for turning this policy into actions and implementing this on behalf of the Elected Mayor.

What kind of qualities does North Tyneside Council look for in its colleagues?

If you share our values and are passionate about people and making a difference in our communities, then that’s a really good start. To hear about our colleagues who are making a real difference in their community, find out more in our ‘Make a Difference’ section.

Should I ask questions at my interview?

Absolutely. We want you to use the interview to help you decide if this is the right role and environment for you too – so feel free to ask anything you’re wondering about.

Is there a dress code for the interview?

Depending on the role you’re applying for, we are all typically smart/casual so don’t worry about going out and buying suits and ties for your interview. We are interested in you and what you have to offer.

I might need some help with the recruitment process, what do I do?

At North Tyneside Council we passionately believe in equality, diversity and inclusion. We match this passion with action to ensure that our colleagues always feel like they belong here, and this sentiment extends to our soon to be colleagues.

We want everyone to be able to be their best selves and fully participate in our recruitment practices, so we try to identify and remove as many barriers as possible. If there is something you need from us, just ask.
