Adopt North East has launched a new podcast series designed to help adoptive families and explore life after adoption through honest, personal stories.

Featuring adopters, young people, birth family members, and professionals, the series covers topics like contact with birth families, identity, and building trust.

The podcasts offer practical advice alongside lived experiences, helping families feel supported and understood.

They are created with the guidance of experienced adopters, birth family members and adoption support workers, and are easy to listen to at home, while travelling or with others involved in a child’s care.

One of the adopters taking part in the series is mum Sarah. She spoke about her experience of meeting up with her adopted child’s birth family: “Every family’s experience is different, depending on the child’s age and needs but for us, having support from an Adopt North East social worker made a huge difference. They helped us ask the right questions, set clear boundaries and choose safe spaces for meetings.

“For him, contact was like finding a missing piece. It helped him understand more about where he comes from and why he is the way he is. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been important.”

Nik Flavell, Head of Service for Adopt North East, said: “This podcast series is a brilliant way to share real stories about modern adoption. It’s warm, honest and shows the human side of adoption. By hearing directly from those with lived experience, we hope it will increase awareness of how life-changing adoption can be. The series shows how challenging but also rewarding adoption can be and the amount of support that is now available to help adopters and their children”

The Adopt North East podcasts feature honest and powerful personal stories, which may include sensitive or emotionally triggering content. The views expressed are personal and not representative of Adopt North East.

If you are affected by anything you hear, support is available. You can contact the Adopt North East Family Connections Team at familyconnections@adoptne.org.uk
