About Streetworks

About Streetworks in North Tyneside

  • Streetworks refers to all roadworks and street-works on publicly maintained highways. Any works on public roads, pavements or footways that require digging, reinstatement, service installations, or other disruption.
  • Such works must obtain a permit from North Tyneside Council. This must be under a formal permitting scheme.
  • The permit system doesn’t cover works on private streets. In those cases, permission from the street-owner is expected.

About the permit system

The permit scheme exists to

  • Reduce the amount of time a road or pavement is occupied by works (minimising disruption)
  • Coordinate and schedule works better. To ensure multiple utilities / contractors aren’t working on the same stretch at the same time.
  • Ensure the council has oversight on timing, traffic management proposals, reinstatement standards, and compliance. This is to protect the public highway in the long term.
  • Improve transparency and reduce complaints by having clearer controls and communication
