Hospital and home tuition

Education for students who cannot attend school because of health needs

Our aim is to help the young person maintain their educational progress and lessen the impact of non attendance. We do not make judgements about an individual’s circumstance, we simply seek to support their progress.

School will:

  1. Work with the Hospital and Home Tutor in the drawing up of a personal education plan for the child.
  2. Provide information about the curriculum (including information on the current class work) and work the child may miss, in order to help the child keep up, rather than have to catch up.
  3. Provide the child with the same learning materials that he or she would normally use in school.
  4. Ensure the formal marking of submitted work and assessments then return the marked work or assessment marks to the child.
  5. Use electronic media (i.e. virtual classrooms) and learning platforms to support the child’s learning.

Hospital and Home Tuition Service will:

  1. Meet with the school’s representative for the child in order to work with the school in the drawing up of a personal education plan.
  2. Draw up a personal learning plan (based on the information provided by school, referred to in point 1 above).
  3. Provide appropriate education for the child that is suitable to the child’s age, aptitude, ability and any special educational needs that he or she may have, based on planning documents provided by the school.
  4. Report back to the school on a weekly basis.
  5. Provide direct feedback to the responsible adult who is at home during tuition.
  6. Review the provision offered regularly to ensure that it continues to be appropriate for the child and that it is providing suitable education.
  7. Liaise with the appropriate medical professionals.
  8. Assist in the reintegration of the child back into school.

The child’s parents / carers will

  1. In the case of home tuition, ensure that a responsible adult is always present in the home while tuition is taking place.
  2. Provide a suitable room that is well lit, where there is no smoke or pets and where the child can work without distraction (i.e. TV off, no interruptions).
  3. Ensure that their child, if well enough, completes work set by the school and tutor.
  4. Make sure that their child does not have access to distractions such as television and computer games during the school day.
  5. Make sure that their child is up, dressed, and ready to work when the tutor arrives.
  6. Contact the home tutor to cancel a session as soon as it becomes clear that their child is unavailable for the tuition session due to health or other reasons.

Schools retain responsibility for the education of students on their roll. It is the function of the Hospital and Home Tuition Service to co-ordinate and facilitate continuity of access to education. Referrals should be made by Consultants/Hospital Teaching Service/CAMHS and/or by the referring school using our referral form. This form should be supported by a letter from the child’s medical Consultant explaining the mental health or medical reasons they are unable to attend mainstream school. The school should make a referral after 15 days of absence.
