Substance Misuse and young people
Early exposure to substances can have long-lasting effects on a child's physical, emotional, and psychological well-being.
A family history of substance misuse can increase the likelihood of a child developing similar behaviours. Environmental factors, such as living in a high-risk neighbourhood, peer pressure, or exposure to substance misuse at home or in the community, also play a significant role.
Many children who misuse substances also struggle with mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, or trauma. They may use substances as a coping mechanism to deal with their emotional struggles.
Speaking to children about substance misuse requires sensitivity, understanding, and clear communication. The goal is to inform them about the risks without making them feel scared, judged, or misunderstood.
