Public Computers in North Tyneside Libraries – Acceptable Use Policy
PCs are available for use in all libraries, free to library members and visitors. There are charges for printing and photocopying, please ask the staff for details of the current charges.
Who Can Use the Computers?
- All library members can use the computers for free. If you are a visitor, just ask the staff for help.
- If you're under 16, you must have permission from a parent. Children under 8 must be with an adult at all times. It is the responsibility of the parent or carer to guide their children’s use of the PCs.
- You must not let anyone else use your library card or PIN to access a computer, or use another person’s card (including family members). You are responsible for all use made of this PC with your ticket.
- You will need your library card and PIN to log on. If you forget your card, you will be asked to confirm some personal details and staff will log you on, but you will need to insert your PIN.
- You must agree to the terms at the start of each session and are responsible for all activity until you log out.
What’s Available?
- You can use the internet, free web-based email services, MS Word and Excel and online resources like Ancestry and Find My Past.
- There is a charge for printing – colour is more expensive than black and white. Ask the staff for current prices.
- Sessions last for 2 hours but can be extended. All sessions end 15 minutes before the library closes.
- Use headphones to listen to sound.
- You can save files to USB sticks on some PCs.
- You can’t load your own software, save personal files to the PCs or plug in hardware. Downloading files from unknown sources can spread viruses – if you cause damage, you’ll be held responsible.
Privacy, safety and security
- The library is not responsible for the accuracy or reliability of anything you find online.
- We use filtering software to block offensive or illegal websites, but it’s not perfect – some bad content may still appear, or legitimate content may be blocked.
- You are responsible for following the law – don’t view or download anything indecent, offensive, illegal or protected by copyright. Do not damage equipment or attempt to subvert security measures.
- The internet is not fully secure. North Tyneside Council takes no responsibility for losses caused by sending private, sensitive or financial details online.
- Don’t leave personal information on screen when you leave the computer.
Misuse and Monitoring
- If you misuse the computers, damage equipment or cause a disturbance, your access may be taken away.
- Serious offences could be reported to the police, and you could be prosecuted.
- Computer use can be monitored, especially if inappropriate use is suspected.
Help and Support
- Staff may be able to assist if you have issues.
- Some libraries hold sessions with partners offering digital help.
