What is a Carbon footprint?
A carbon footprint is a measure of how many tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) you put into the world. We know that Housing is one of the biggest contributors to the production of CO2 emissions.
Why do we need to act now?
Communities, the environment, and the economy will be severely affected
The climate emergency is a real and significant threat. If we don’t make significant changes to the way we live, work, and move around, it will damage:
- Our communities.
- Our environment.
- Our economy.
In July 2019, North Tyneside Council declared a Climate Emergency. We set a target to reduce the Borough's carbon footprint by 50% by 2023 and to become carbon neutral by 2050.
We are committed to tackling the Climate Emergency and we have many ways to stop this. At the end of 2019/20, our carbon footprint had decreased by 46% since the baseline year of 2010/11. Thus, it is likely that we will achieve the 50% reduction target by the 2023 target date.
