How is council tax calculated?
Your council tax is based on the valuation band of your property. This is worked out by the Valuation Office Agency
Your home is allocated one of eight bands according to its market value at 1 April 1991. The price of your home today is not a good guide on what your band should be.
To work out the amount you pay in each band we look at the money we need to run the services we provide.
The amount we collect is the difference between how much budget we need to provide services and how much we have to spend.
Your council tax bill will also include the amount you have to pay towards:
- police
- fire services
- adult social care precepts
- If you live in an area with a parish or town council, there is an extra charge for the services they provide.
