Guide to emergency plans

Evacuations

Some emergencies may require you to leave your home and stay in places or safety such as rest centres, temporary accommodation or with family and friends.

Evacuations are a last-resort measure carried out with the welfare of residents in mind.

You do not have to evacuate. However, it is strongly recommended that you always follow the advice of the emergency services. This will keep you and your family safe.

Think about the things you’d need if you stayed away from home for a few days. Consider your emergency bag.

If you have time:

  • A responsible adult should turn off electricity, gas and water supplies, unplug appliances and lock all doors and windows.
  • You might want to consider taking some of the items noted about with you.

Responders will prioritise looking after vulnerable people in an emergency. Initially, they may not be able to look after pets and livestock. Efforts will be made, where practical, to do so.
