Memorial seats

A quality hard wood, varnished bench and a cast iron inscribed plaque with a message of your choosing. There is a word limit. The seat will go in your chosen location from a list of pre-allocated spaces for a 10 year period. The seat will get 3 refurbishments, and inspections twice a year, so it remains in good condition.

We will cover the cost of any repairs or replacements because of damage, theft or vandalism. Subject to the terms of the agreement.

You can buy two more plaques for your seat at any time during the agreement.

You have the option of extending the agreement and keeping the seat in place for a further 5 years at the end of the 10 year agreement. This will be subject to a further fee but it will continue to receive inspections and 1 refurbishment.

On expiry of the agreement we will deliver the seat and/or plaque to a North Tyneside address free of charge.

Terms and conditions

This agreement runs for a period of 10 years from the first day of the month following installation.

At the end of the 10-year agreement term, the applicant will have the option to extend the agreement for a period of five years, for a cost to be determined by North Tyneside Council and supplied to the applicant at the time of renewal.

If you do not wish to extend the agreement, the seat and/or plaque can be returned to you free of charge (for North Tyneside addresses). If we are unable to make contact on expiry of the agreement, benches will be kept for three months and plaques will be kept for six months from the date of expiry, before being disposed of.

North Tyneside Council reserves the right to vary any inscription as may be found necessary, or refuse an inscription which is considered unsuitable.

Additional plaques (max. two) can be purchased from North Tyneside Council. The applicant is not permitted to attach unofficial plaques to the bench.

North Tyneside Council accepts all liability for the maintenance and condition of the bench, including responsibility for any repairs and/or replacement as a result of damage, vandalism or theft.

During the term of the agreement, North Tyneside Council will commit to carrying out twice-yearly inspections to assess the condition of the bench and three refurbishments, which will include sanding down and re-varnishing of the woodwork.

North Tyneside Council reserves the right to relocate or remove a bench if it is deemed necessary, particularly if it becomes a hazard. In this instance, North Tyneside Council agrees to notify the applicant.

During the term of this agreement the applicant accepts responsibility for ensuring the contact information held by the Property Services team for the purposes of the memorial bench is accurate and will notify the Property Services team of

any changes.

The applicant agrees to ensure no excessive decoration, including flowers, memorabilia, photos or ornaments, will be placed on the bench limiting the use of the seat. Any decoration placed on the memorial bench is the applicant’s responsibility. North Tyneside Council does not accept any liability for such items and reserves the right to remove them should they be causing an obstruction or pose any environmental impact on the surrounding areas.
