Grave rights
When you buy the grave rights for 50 years you become the deed holder. You decide who can be buried in that grave, the inscription and type of memorial.
Deed holders can assign the grave rights to someone else in their lifetime.
If that doesn’t happen and the owner of the rights dies,
If you need further interments or a new memorial, a legal transfer of the rights will need to take place if the deed has not been assigned.
This will help to avoid family conflict where many family members all have an equal claim on the grave.
Please contact Preston Cemetery Office on (0191) 643 6070.
If you choose not to buy the rights to a grave, we will offer you a grave which has been buried in at least 14 years ago with depth remaining for a further burial.
These un-purchased graves can't have a fixed memorial but can have a vase or wooden cross (cemetery fee payable). It may also be possible for one family to buy the grave at a later date. They can erect a memorial to their loved one, even though others are buried in the same grave.
